Jack Wells

Jack Wells is a senior scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and group leader for two closely related research groups: the Computational Materials Sciences (CMS) Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, and the Nanomaterials Theory Institute (NTI) in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS). The CMS group focuses on developing state-of-the-art computational science approaches to materials science, condensed matter physics, and nanoscience. The NTI has a thriving, growing user community focused on a wide breadth of theory, modeling, and computational research that crosses all of the disciplines in the experimental research programs for CNMS. Jack originally came to ORNL in 1990 to work on his Ph.D. in Physics from Vanderbilt University, and he returned to ORNL as staff scientist in 1997 as a Wigner Fellow. Jack is an accomplished practitioner of computational physics and has been supported primarily by the Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences. Jack served for two years as legislative fellow in the U.S. Senate in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander with policy development responsibilities for energy, science, and technology.
